It was announced last year that the much-loved actress Barbara Windsor had been given a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s four years ago and that her condition was unfortunately deteriorating.
Now some of the cast of EastEnders have announced they will be running this years’ London Marathon for ‘Dementia Revolution’ in honour of Dame Barbara Windsor, in a team aptly named Barbara’s Revolutionaries.
Cast members Adam Woodyatt, Jake Wood, Emma Barton, Jamie Borthwick, Natalie Cassidy, Tanya Franks, Kellie Shirley and Jane Slaughter make up the team alongside her husband Scott Mitchell.
Dementia is the name for a group of symptoms that commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem solving, language and perception and is caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common. More than 520,000 people in the UK have dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease and this figure is set to rise, according to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK have created the ‘Dementia Revolution’ to power ground-breaking research at the UK Dementia Research Institute. They are joining forces for a year-long campaign in an effort to overthrow old attitudes and lead the charge towards a cure.
Jake Wood who portrays Max Branning in Eastenders and one of the team running, said;
“Dementia is caused by diseases that affect so many people, like Barbara, yet awareness of dementia is so low and research is so underfunded.”
The team is hoping to raise an incredible £100,000 by running the event which take place on Sunday, 28 April in the capital.
